Well, sort of! The lack of noise at Murrayfield when Edinburgh are playing at home is a running joke in Scottish rugby, but this was taking it to a whole new level. Murrayfield gets green-light to host fans next weekend. Ian Barr warns clubs that 31st October return date is not guaranteed. But all things considered, it was a pretty good effort in the circumstances. Jaco van der Walt kicked Edinburgh into a third minute lead when Matt Fagerson was penalised for failing to roll away after making a tackle, and the capital stand-off doubled his account from right in front of the posts following a Warriors offside with six minutes on the clock. Straight from the restart, Warriors responded in kind, with Hastings capitalising after the pack had bashed their way to within a few metres of the line. The conversion rebounded off the right post, leaving the men from the west with a narrow lead at the turnaround. Edinburgh dominated territory and possession at the start of the second half, but their attack lacked focus, until — finally — on the hour mark, van der Walt released Duhan van der Merwe on the left, who slalomed past several flailing Warriors before releasing Groom for his second try with a lovely one-handed offload.

Edinburgh have long yearned to be taken seriously as a force in the the final last season but resurfaced in their stuttering campaign to date.
For the first time in what seems like an age, Edinburgh are expected to swat aside their ancient rivals in the successive Murrayfield derbies that end the regular PRO14 season. Protect that berth and a maiden home semi-final beckons. As little as a solitary point from the inter-city showdowns will book them a place in the last four. Cockerill inherited a disparate and unreliable squad with little discernible culture and even less respect from its foes across the division. In three years, he has led Edinburgh to a first-ever PRO14 league play-off, a third-ever Champions Cup quarter-final and fostered greater links between the club, its history and its people.
His manner with players, choice of language and truculent nature have caused upset. But the results on his watch and the growth of the team have been undeniably brilliant. The squad, too, has a settled and formidable look to it. Edinburgh have kept hold of their biggest players this summer and of the front-liners, only Matt Scott and Simon Hickey left while John Barclay retired.
Allowing Hickey to move on coupled with the scuppered signing of Jono Lance, however, leaves Cockerill without a senior alternative to Jaco van der Walt at fly-half. Still, they are in very healthy shape. The focus was on making use of a snarling pack, defending stoutly and following a simple but effective blueprint. That resilience remains. The more stringent applications of breakdown laws should suit their jackals, the supreme Hamish Watson and Luke Crosbie.

Changing environmental conditions cause changes in the distributions of phenotypic traits in natural populations. However, determining the mechanisms responsible for these changes—and, in particular, the relative contributions of phenotypic plasticity versus evolutionary responses—is difficult. To our knowledge, no study has yet reported evidence that evolutionary change underlies the most widely reported phenotypic response to climate change: the advancement of breeding times.

Nicola Sturgeon will make an announcement live today, announcing new dates for easing the country out of lockdown. Welcome to today’s live blog as we follow Nicola Sturgeon’s daily briefing and announcement live from In her daily speech, the First Minister is not expected to make any major changes to coronavirus restrictions in Scotland when she announces the outcome of the latest review of lockdown.
But with Scotland currently dealing with a number of coronavirus clusters, and with schools having reopened to pupils last week, it is not expected she will make any significant changes to the current arrangements. When she gave her last review on July 30, Ms Sturgeon warned Scotland may have to stay in phase three of her four-part plan for lifting lockdown restrictions beyond this point.
And as a move to phase four can only happen if ministers are satisfied that coronavirus is no longer considered a significant threat to public health, this is not likely to happen yet. Ms Sturgeon, however, could give an update on indicative dates she has already announced for when some sectors could reopen.
She previously stated that organised outdoor contact sports and live events which take place outside, with physical distancing in place, could resume, with restricted numbers, from August Some indoor facilities, such as bingo halls, have been given the same date, which has also been suggested for the resumption of funfairs and driving lessons. A boost in domestic tourists “rediscovering their own country” has led to rural self-catering accommodation recovering faster than hotels, a Holyrood committee heard.
Marc Crothall, chief executive of the STA, said it was “absolutely essential” to push for more income for hotels due to their high running costs while rooms remain empty. He continued: “Survival is really, really critical.
